Your coworker puts down his Subway sandwich, ”Did you see this new AI tool?”. You instantly zone out. He continues: ”It can…”. After three more words you know exactly what he’s talking about, but man he’s still talking. You block out all sound and start counting seconds in your head until he shuts up. Fifteen seconds pass, your focus shifts towards the greasy meatball sandwich. You start envisioning how much money you’d have if the office had a ”swear jar”, but an AI jar instead. Eventually you nod your head and go "Yeah pretty cool".
This is you, this is me. Most of us have been on both sides of this table, and we swing between marvelling at AI advances to feeling fed up by all the nonstop buzzwordy content. AI-nnoyance comes in many shapes and forms, and what triggers me are AI generated posts about AI tools. Maybe we are supercomputers after all, cos I think you can really smell it when something isn't human made. And when trying to connect with other humans, just be a fucking human and write it yourself. The two paragraphs you just read scored a whopping 0% in a tool that detects AI generated content.
Last year was the discovery phase of AI, we felt like the movies we grew up watching finally came true with all the advancements in automation and content generation. Friendly reminder to ask yourself if your AI subscriptions are paying off though, are the tools worth it considering the data you may or may not be giving up aswell? I don't remember Spielberg telling us about the $29/month subscriptions, but I guess we should've known better than to think that the future was well structured.
Can you smell that? Not the meatball subway you hungry bastard. It smells like it's time for a change. We should start asking ourselves what we want to do, rather than what we can do. Purpose is the king of speculation, and it beats rock paper and even scissors every single time. Read that again.
The next time you feel AI-nnoyance, please remember that enthusiasm levels are cyclical, and chances are you've been the person who's annoying you aswell. The root of the problem is as simple as signal and noise. You need to take the good and fuck off the rest. One persons signal might be anothers noise, and vice versa. Just think for yourself. And know you’re not alone.
Don’t be a fool — Become Foolproof
Love it, even if I'm that person that people get annoyed by, haha. Great post Olof
